John F. Scholes was, at one time, amateur heavyweight boxing champion of Canada. He was built on much the same lines as Bob Fitzsimmons.
Scholes helped promote the Joe Walcott-Jim Judge fight in April 1899 in Toronto and put up Walcott and his manager Tim O'Rourke in his home. His son Lou was an amateur boxer and champion sculler, and his son Jack Jr. was amateur world featherweight champion won at Liverpool, England in 1899.
