Name: Johnny Dohan
Hometown: Brooklyn, New York, USA
Height: 169cm
Pro Boxer: Record

Manager: George Armstrong

On August 11, 1904, Johnny Dohan had not yet appeared in a Philadelphia ring. However, on that date his manager published a claim in the Philadelphia Item that he was an experienced fighter and had engaged in the following fights, with the results as given:

  • Kid Lowe, Brooklyn, W ko 1
  • Jack Mulligan, Brooklyn, W Points 3
  • Kid Sullivan, Brooklyn, W Points 3
  • Tommy Haynes, Brooklyn, W ko 5
  • Kid Tully, Brooklyn, W ko 1
  • Tommy Downs, Brooklyn, W Points 10
  • Kid Brooks, Brooklyn, W ko 7
  • Kid Half, Brooklyn, W Points 10
  • Jack Bradley, Brooklyn, W ko 3
  • Jack Grady, Brooklyn, W ko 7
  • Jack Erbey, Brooklyn, W Points 10
  • Will (Itsey) Ryan, Brooklyn, Draw 6
  • Walter Jennings, Danbury CT, W Points 8
  • Joe Williams, Boston, Points 6
  • Young Gardner, Homestead, Draw 4
  • Jack Ashton, Philadelphia, Draw 6
  • Kid Wallace, Philadelphia, W ko 2

However, boxing had been illegal in New York for the previous several years although illicit private bouts were staged. The results of the fights that took place outside New York have not been found in newspapers. Under the circumstances, it seems best to not include these fights in Dohan's record until and unless they are verified.

The only records for Dohan that ever appeared in record books were in the 1915 and 1916 T.S. ANDREWS' WORLD SPORTING ANNUAL & RECORD BOOK and the 1909 to 1911 editions of POLICE GAZETTE SPORTING ANNUAL. The attached record was obtained from newspaper accounts (in other words directly from reports of the day after), with the exception of fights with Marty Rowan (7/9/09, Al Schumacher (1/14/10), Jimmy Cooley (3/24/10), Dick Nelson (9/2/10), and Joe Bedell (3/15/15), which were dated entries in record books. The following fights are in Dohan's published record, but have not been included, because they lack dates and/or could not be confirmed.

  • The supposed early fights of Dohan, listed above.
  • Lew Ryall, 1906, no decision 6 rounds.
  • Marty Rowan, 1910, two no decision fights, 10 rounds each.
  • Terry McGraw, 1910, won 15 rounds.
  • Paddy Sullivan, 1911, no decision 10 rounds.
  • Al Dewey, 1913, no decision 6 rounds.
  • Joe Hyland, 1913, no decision 10 rounds.

This record contains some fights not in Dohan's published record and corrects some misspellings. Dohan seems to have retired at the end of 1915, but returned to the ring briefly in 1921.
