According to the World War I Draft Registration database on the Ancestry.com website, one William Shelley Gill, a 21-year old "Pugilist," was born on May 3, 1896 in York, Pennsylvania. He was a resident of York and his registration took place on June 5, 1917.

According to his page connected to the Glitsch Family Tree in the Family Tree section of the Ancestry.com website, one William Shelley Gill was born on May 3, 1896 in York, Pennsylvania and died on August 3, 1977 in Cotopaxi, Colorado. Attached to the page is a news item clipping about Gill's mother having three sons serving in the U.S. Army and a fourth who was subject to the first call of the draft. One of her sons was William S. (Johnnie) Gill, "a welterweight pugilist" who was serving in Company K, Eighth Infantry in York, Pennsylvania. The news item with a 2nd of August date and a York, Pennsylvania dateline was in the August 3, 1917 edition of the Baltimore Sun.

Per the material from a local newspaper Adams County News, the previously listed fight versus Louie Cohen in Gettysburg, PA in July 1917 was not a proper professional fight, but just an exhibition between established pro fighters and soldiers from a regiment based in Gettysburg. Thus that fight (KO1 for Gill) has been removed.
