According to a September 14, 1934 news item with a Grand Forks, North Dakota dateline in the September 14, 1934 edition of the Bismarck Tribune (Bismarck, North Dakota), Johnny Knauf, "a one-time welterweight fighter and now a Grand Forks dentist", was refereeing a main event bout between Ernie Hetherington and a black boxer named Ace of Spades during which Knauf warned Ace of Spades repeatedly for stalling. During the fifth round while taking a beating, Ace of Spades spun off the ropes and threw a couple of punches at Knauf. After both punches missed, Ace of Spades continued to attack. Knauf circled and drove the black fighter before "dropping him with a two-fisted attack to the head," knocking him out in the process. Afterwards, Knauf raised Hetherington's hand in victory. Note- This bout took place on Thursday (September 13, 1934).
