Johnny Marto was a hard-bitten lightweight of the early Twentieth Century. He fought Jack Britton, Ted (Kid) Lewis, Leach Cross, Abe Attell, Jim Driscoll, and numerous other outstanding fighters of the period. In 112 known fights he was never knocked out and is known to have been knocked down only once (by Jim Bonner in New York, November 2, 1911, in a fight that Marto won by newspaper decision).

In addition to the 122 fights presently shown in his record, Marto is believed to have had a number of others. For instance, there is reason to believe that he fought Tommy Shea, and other opponents, in fights not yet traced.
