"Tucson's Johnny Rico won the vacant Arizona welterweight championship last night at the Tucson Community Center Exhibition Hall. Frankie Kolovart lost when he failed to answer the bell for the 5th round. Kolovart claimed he had suffered a broken right forearm when Rico blocked one of his punches with an elbow. Rico was ahead on all official cards when the bout was halted. There were no knockdowns in the lively fight. Rico was in command after the 1st round and he was pressing his attack after opening a cut over Kolovart's left eye in the 3rd round." -Tucson Daily Citizen
- Kolovart, the champion, lost his title on the scales when he could not make the 147 lb. limit. The title was vacated and could only be won by Rico. If Kolovart won, the title would remain vacant.
