"Johnny Saxton, 147 3/4, outpointed fellow New Yorker Joe Miceli, 147 1/2, at Olympia Stadium tonight. Miceli throws an odd-looking left uppercut. It's fooled more than one fighter. But not Saxton, who learned the tricks of boxing in a Brooklyn orphanage. In the 1st round, Miceli tossed his left uppercut at Saxton. Saxton calmly warded them off as though he were pushing his way onto a crowded subway train. Then the unbeaten Saxton opened up. Normally a body puncher, he went head-hunting and the next few rounds had Miceli in trouble against the ropes. But Miceli refused to go down and the action became so heated that at the end of the 4th round both fighters kept punching away for at least five seconds after the bell. The referee and handlers from both corners finally had to part them. Miceli rallied briefly in the closing rounds but Saxton had built up too big a lead." -Associated Press

Post-fight comments
- "This right wrist of mine was what did it. Everytime he'd throw that crazy left uppercut of his, I'd block it with my right wrist. And now i'm ready for any welterweight in the world - Chuck Davey, Gil Turner and even Kid Gavilan." -Johnny Saxton
- "I'm going to take it easy for a while - and learn to listen to my manager." -Joe Miceli
