Saxton suffered his first career knockdown in the 1st.
"Undefeated Johnny Saxton, 147, stunned by a 1st round knockdown, came back to win a unanimous 10-round decision over Virgil Akins, 139, tonight in their nationally televised bout in Chicago Stadium. Akins, a natural lightweight, was outweighed eight pounds by the New Yorker. Saxton was spilled for the first time in his career in the 1st round when the St. Louis fighter dropped him with a right hand to the chin for a count of eight. However, the eight-pound weight bulge was a handicap to Akins, who began to fade at the start of the 7th after boxing superbly earlier. Saxton won on superior aggressiveness and stamina in forcing the fighting." Associated Press
- Saxton failed to make the stipulated weight of 147 at the noon weigh-in. He was given an hour to melt off the extra pound and did so.
