- Whitehurst's handlers stated he collapsed from heat prostration and the effects of a severe beating after returning to his dressing room.
"Bert Whitehurst, Baltimore heavyweight, was under observation at Detroit Memorial Hospital Wednesday after he suffered a convulsion following his defeat by Johnny Summerlin of Detroit. Although he suffered severe poundings in the 6th and 8th rounds and had to be helped from the ring, the former sparring partner of heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano remained on his feet during the entire eight rounds of the feature attraction at the Motor City Arena. Both fighters showed the effects of the 95 degree heat in the arena but the beating administered by Summerlin rendered Whitehurst almost helpless at the end of the fight." -United Press
