According to World Boxing Hall of Fame boxing commentator, Bob Sheridan, immediately prior to Benavidez's Nov. 12, 2011 bout with Sammy Santana (as televised on the Audience TV channel), Benavidez had been given a waiver by the Nevada State Boxing Commission to turn professional at an earlier age than normal, because his skills were so advanced as an amateur.
