Jose Cardenas began his 16-bout amateur career in April 1945 at age nineteen. He turned pro on the undercard card of the Feb. 7, 1947 Joe Louis-Arturo Godoy bout at Mexico City.

Born in Vera Cruz, on April 13, 1926, his family moved to Tlalpam - a suburb of Mexico City - when he was ten. He boxed throughout Mexico and USA; then decided to study law.

Late in 1950, at age 27, he gave up boxing, returned home and began to work his way through the Facultad de Derecho y Ciencas Sociales, in Mexico City. He graduated on Nov. 20, 1952, and worked hard to become a successful lawyer.
