Jose Luis Martinez was born in Vitoria in July 1928 (the exact day is uncertain) and at the age of 4 moved to Logroño with his parents. After 72 amateur fights, he turned professional in July 1952. Fighting mainly out of Barcelona, he would go on to win the Spanish featherweight title and travel all over the world. By the end of March 1964 he had fought 143 professional fights.
