Jose Medel beat Katsuo Saito by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1965-05-13
  • Location: Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan
  • "Mexican bantamweight champion Jose Medel won a majority 10-round decision Thursday night over Japan's Katsuo Saito at Nihon University Gymnasium before some 2,000 fans. Medel's stinging left jabs kept the Japanese at a distance in the early round before the Mexican took the initiative in the 2nd round and was the aggressor up to the 8th round, but he just couldn't land a solid punch. The real battle started in the 9th when the two fighters traded short blows. In the final round Saito rushed Medel into the ropes with a left and right attack but the cool-headed Mexican fought his way out after weathering another body attack. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press

    • World bantamweight champion Eder Jofre's manager, Abraham Katzenelson, accepted Saito's challenge for a title defense, provided he got past Medel. However, even in spite of the fact that Saito lost, there would have been no title opportunity as Jofre was in Japan to defend his title against Fighting Harada and lost the title 5 days later.
