"Jose Medel, Mexico City, scored a hard-fought unanimous decision over his fellow countryman, Mario DeLeon, last night in a 12 round title elimination bout at the Olympic Auditorium. Medel used his height, weight and reach to good advantage, staggering DeLeon in the 5th and 11th rounds with solid blows to the head. There were no knockdowns." -United Press International
- Olympic Boxing Club Matchmaker George Parnassus attempted to sign world flyweight champion Pascual Perez for a title defense against Medel for the spring of 1959 in Los Angeles. The bout, however, never came off.
