Royal Kobayashi 125 lbs beat Jose Medel 125 lbs by RTD at 3:00 in round 6 of 10

  • Date: 1974-06-09
  • Location: Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan
  • "Unbeaten ex-Olympian Royal Kobayashi, 125 1/2, dropped Jose Medel, Mexico, in the 6th round and won on a TKO at the end of the round in a scheduled 10-rounder. It was a hard-fought contest. Medel, 125 1/4, seemed still sharp for all his age of 36. He threw a right-hand counter which almost floored the Japanese hope in the 3rd. But Kobayashi chased the Mexican, boring in gamely and punching him all the way. Up to the stoppage Kobayashi took three rounds aggressively with a clear-cut margin each. In round six Royal's smashing left to his rival's jaw floored Medel for a compulsory eight-count. From the 5th session on Medel bled profusely from a gash over the left eyebrow. The third man called a halt on the physician's advice." -Ring Magazine, November 1974 issue

    • After the bout Medel announced his retirement from the Ring and the JBC officials held a ceremony for him in Korakuen Hall before 2,000 people in attendance, praising the 10 times that Medel fought in Japanese rings.
