  • In 1939 Jose Mercado of Hawaii became the United States Amateur Flyweight Champion by decision vs. Beebe Rich of Kansas City, MO. Mercado retired from the ring upon his return to the Hawaiian Islands after winning his amateur title, and never turned professional.
