- Date: 1971-07-31
- Location: Arena Coliseo, Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico
- Referee: Carlos Garcia
"Welterweight champion of the world, Jose 'Mantequilla' Napoles, put the coup de grace on David 'Toro' Melendez of Puerto Rico in the 5th of a scheduled non-title 10 rounder. It was not much of a fight. Napoles had too many guns for Melendez. By the end of the 2nd round, there was no doubt as to who would win. Melendez was game, but gameness is not nearly enough when fighting a champion." -Ring Magazine, December 1971 issue
- Melendez was down in the 1st round for an eight-count from a Napoles right hook.
