"Welterweight champion Jose Napoles knocked out Fighting Mack of the Dutch West Indies in the 3rd round of a scheduled 10 round non-title fight at the Forum Friday night. Boxing on even terms with Mack in the first two rounds, the hard-punching champion stepped up the pace at the beginning of the 3rd. The first significant punch Napoles threw, a bolo right to the head, caught Mack flush on the chin and dumped him over the bottom rope onto the ring apron where he was counted out at 0:42 of the round."
- Napoles' purse for the non-title fight was $20,000
- This bout was a tuneup for a November 15th title defense in Vienna, Austria against Johann Orsolics. However, Orsolics was knocked out in four rounds by Eddie Perkins in September, which scuttled the match.
