Jose Napoles 146 lbs beat Johnny DePeiza 142 lbs by TKO at 2:04 in round 1 of 10

  • Date: 1967-09-11
  • Location: Plaza de Toros, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico
  • Referee: Young Amado

"Johnny DePeiza collapsed under a barrage of punches and failed to survive the opening round of a bout scheduled for ten stanzas. DePeiza, groggy and beaten, lasted only two minutes and four seconds. DePeiza came into the fight with more confidence than caution, trying to throw Napoles off-stride with an early onslaught. DePeiza was on the canvas twice before the kayo, both times by strong rights. But it was a left that finished him off." -El Paso Herald Post

  • "What impressed me most about Napoles was this. He doesn't throw two or three hard punches in a flurry. He throws five or six. Any one of his shots can put a man on the canvas." -Archie Moore, trainer of DePeiza
