Referee Joe Cortez disqualified Paez for hitting Ramos while he was down. Ramos had dropped to the canvas an instant before, claiming that a left hook by Paez was below the belt. Paez, who claimed afterward that Ramos' knees were not on the canvas, struck him and Ramos dropped to the canvas. Ramos was leading 39-36 on all of the judges scorecards at the time of disqualification. Paez had been knocked down in the 1st round.
