Juan Carlos Casala was an excellent boxer who became a respected sports writer in Uruguay after his retirement from the ring. Upon his arrival in Cuba in 1922 he was said to be the Spanish lightweight champion and to have fought in Spain, Germany, France and the UK. In reality he was from Uruguay and had fought exclusively in the Americas. He had first gone from South America to New York. Finding it difficult to get fights there, he moved to Cuba.
