Ortiz was rated as high as no. 2 in the United States and won the NJ Golden Gloves in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997, and earned a bronze at the 1996 U.S. Boxing Championships. Is the nephew of former featherweight boxer Edwin Santiago.
