Juste Fontaine was born and schooled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He left high school during his junior year following the death of his father. Fontaine boxed as an amateur for four years and was Milwaukee's Golden Gloves flyweight and bantamweight champion.

"He's a helluva puncher," Fritzie Zivic said. "I became his manager after I boxed with him in the gym one day and he hit me on the chin harder than anybody ever hit me before. And I have been hit by a lot of good punchers."

Following an eight-year career, Fontaine was retired by Commissioner Lou Shiring after a "bad showing" against Lou Marsh on May 15th, 1950. He returned for one more bout over four years later and knocked out Bill Dowling to close his career.

After retiring, he worked as an insurance salesman and a boxing trainer and promoter for amateurs around the Milwaukee area.

Fontaine, 50, died on December 4th, 1974, two months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.
