Pre-Fight comment

  • "You'd think that the same arrangement would hold for both men, but it doesn't. I don't get a title shot if I beat Charnley. It's starting to sound like a run-around. If a guy beats me, he gets a shot at Ortiz, but if I win, no rematch." -Kenny Lane, on promoter Jack Solomons' statement that if Charnley wins he gets a title shot against Carlos Ortiz for the lightweight title in London on September 22nd.

"Britain's Dave Charnley put on a grandstand finish Tuesday night to hammer out a 10 round decision over Kenny Lane, Muskegon, Mich., in a southpaw battle billed as the final elimination for the world lightweight champion. (In the 9th) Charnley came alive as the 8,000 Wembley Pool fans roared for the home man. They met in the center of the ring and threw left bombs at each other and then the Briton snapped Lane's head back with a vicious right. Both men were very tired when they came out for the final round. Charnley rocked Lane with a right and left to the head and Lane had to hold on. Charnley shrugged him off and smashed a right to the face. Lane came back with a right to the side of Charnley's head and he scored with two rights to the body before the Londoner pushed him across the ring as the bell sounded. Referee Andrew Smyth of Belfast walked to Charnley's corner to signal victory for the Englishman. The margin could have been only a fraction of a point." -United Press International

  • The UPI report did not give their point total, only stating that they had Lane ahead before Charnley's drive began in the 9th.
  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 5-3-2 Lane
  • Lane was a substitute for Brian Curvis, who had to withdraw due to a training injury to his achilles tendon on his left leg.
