"Bobby Dykes of Miami, bubbling with confidence after practically ruining Kid Gavilan's comeback campaign, challenged today for a shot at the middleweight crown. Dykes won an upset unanimous 10-round decision over ex-welterweight champion Gavilan before 4,457 fans in Miami Stadium. Although Gavilan suffered his second straight defeat on the comeback trail, the Cuban insisted he would not retire. Dykes retreated throughout the bout; but he beat the game Cuban with long straight rights and right uppercuts. And he tied up Gavilan at close quarters. There were no knockdowns." -United Press
- Unofficial UP scorecard - 97-95 Dykes
