Described as an "unpopular" decision in the Daily News
"George (Sugar) Costner, 149 1/2, scored a stunning upset Monday night with a 10-round majority decision over Cuba's Kid Gavilan, also 149 1/2, at the Arena. Costner, of Camden, N.J., matched right for right and left for left in the furious battle that kept the fans cheering wildly from start to finish. As Gavilan bore in, desperately trying to land his famed bolo for a KO, Costner slammed back giving ground a few times but always coming back with swift uppercuts to the head and chest. The going was furious throughout with a wild flurry of blows starting off the opening round and continuing right through until the closing bell. But always Costner piled up his advantage in the first minute or two, spending the end of the round dodging wicked roundhouses by the ever-dangerous Gavilan. Gavilan, a 2-1 favorite, had figured to have an easy time with Costner, but the New Jersey slugger had different ideas." -Associated Press
