"WBC junior lightweight champion Kuniaki Shibata of Japan Thursday night succeeded in his first title defense with a majority 15 round decision over challenger Antonio Amaya of Panama in their title match here. There were no knockdowns in the fight before 10,000 spectators at the Nihon University Auditorium. Amaya took the advantage of his longer 6 3/4 inch reach using his left jabs and succeeded in keeping Shibata from coming in close during most of the fight." -United Press International
