"Japan's Kuniaki Shibata, charging in aggressively, won the WBC junior lightweight championship Thursday night with a 15 round decision over Ricardo Arredondo of Mexico. A sellout crowd of 14,000 at Nihon University Auditorium watched Shibata bring the title back to Japan 28 months after Yoshiaki Numata lost it to Arredondo in Sendai. Arredondo, attempting his 6th defense of the title, tried to make use of his longer reach and kept jabbing, but the shorter Japanese, ducking and weaving kept charging in. There were no knockdowns but Arredondo was treated for a cut over his left eye." -Wire Services
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 149-145 Shibata
Post fight comments
- "Arredondo was a better fighter than he appeared to be and he is the most skillful boxer I have ever faced. I could not hit harder because I sprained my right ankle when I was warming up in the ring before the fight started." -Kuniaki Shibata
- "I lost because Shibata was very fast. I also suffered from having reduced my weight for the fight and I was not in top condition." -Ricardo Arredondo
