Per the November 14, 1921 Los Angeles Times:
- Safro, a welterweight, was in town from North Dakota, he had a 10-year ring career at that time and had fought Mike Gibbons, Mike O'Dowd, Mickey Sheridan and Tommy Sheehan.
- He had been a halfback football player for the U.S. Marines and had also played professional football for the Minneapolis team.
- During World War I, he had risen from the rank of private to lieutenant.
