- Date: 1977-09-14
- Location: Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
- Referee: Buddy Basilico
Comedian and "Sanford and Son" star Redd Foxx managed Houpe, who called himself "Young Sanford."
"Larry Holmes, 211, Easton, Pa., extended his record to 25-0 and recorded his 18th KO with a 7th round TKO over willing but outgunned Fred 'Young Sanford' Houpe, 199, Hollywood. Holmes used an educated jab and solid rights to bust up Houpe. At the finish at 0:47 of the 7th, Houpe's left eye was nearly closed. Houpe was dropped a split-second before the bell ending round three by a right hand but managed to get up. All he had to look forward to was more punishment. Referee Buddy Basilico's stoppage was a humane gesture." -The Las Vegas SUN
- Houpe was a substitute for Howard Smith, who had to retire due to suffering a detached retina.
