Laszlo Papp, European middleweight champion faced US veteran Charley Cotton in a 10- rounder. Cotton had made his debut in 1948, the year young Papp bursted on the amateur scene in the London Olympics with the first of his three Olympic medals. In his career Cotton had met the likes of Joey Giardello and Henry Hank.
The fight was close until the 3rd when a hard right dropped Cotton who was saved by the bell, laying on his back. The same happened in the 4th, a right to the chin dropped Cotton just before the bell. Cotton was far from beaten and he attacked Papp furiously in the 6th and 7th. In one of these flurries he was suddenly countered by a left from southpaw Papp. Cotton didn't go down but was counted out on his feet.
This was Cotton's last fight.
