Laszlo Papp 159 lbs beat Luis Folledo 160 lbs by TKO in round 8 of 15

  • Date: 1963-12-06
  • Location: Palacio de los Deportes, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid, Spain
  • Referee: Ike Powell

Laszlo Papp made his 4th defense of his European Middleweight title by stopping Spaniard Luis Folledo in the 8th round. The fight took place in Madrid Sports Palace in front of 16,000 spectators.

Folledo, ten years younger than the Hungarian champ, never figured out Papp's southpaw style. Repeatedly he moved the wrong way and literally walked into Papp's left hook. Papp went on with his unstoppable dynamo- style. Folledo was down in the 4th without a count, likeways in the 5th. Papp's punches were snappy hooks and uppercuts who shook the worried- looking Spaniard. The 6th was Folledo's best so far, jabbing and keeping Papp at bay. The 7th also brought hope to the home crowd when Folledo seemed to have gained self confidence and jabbed. But in the 8th a right cross and and left hook put Folledo on the floor. He beat the count and got up groggy. There were only few protests when referee Ike Powell halted the fight.

Trivia: Papp's interpreter at the press conference was the great footballer Ferenc Puskas who for some years had been playing for Real Madrid.
