Laszlo Papp vs. Peter Mueller (3rd meeting)
Laszlo Papp 158 lbs beat Peter Mueller 157 lbs by TKO in round 4 of 15
- Date: 1963-03-30
- Location: Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany
- Referee: Tommy Little
It was third time around when German veteran Peter Mueller faced Laszlo Papp. The Hungarian- Austrian had stopped Mueller twice in 1961. This time Laszlo Papp's European middleweight title was at stake. There were initial protest against the fight. Boxing News called the matching absurd, but Papp and his manager had the legal right to make this " voluntary defence " not dictated by EBU.
Few gave Mueller any hope, but 17,000 spectators filled the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany. Already in the 1st round, Mueller took a beating and was bleeding from the nose. Referee Tommy Little of England issued a warning to the German for fighting after the bell. In the 2nd hooks from Papp wore Mueller out. Mueller used his well- known strategy by trying out different styles. He tried boxing from half distance, but the short stocky Papp got through his guard.
Papp was steam- rolling over Mueller in the 3rd and 4th with hooks and Mueller couldn't do anything about it. The fight became one- sided and Mueller was in danger of being knocked out when referee Little stopped the fight in the 4th. This second attempt to win a European title had failed for Peter Mueller. In 1959 he was KO' d by Gustav Scholz.
