" Vienna- They brought 32- year- old Randy Sandy, who had a mere two fights in the last two years ( lost to George Wright, outpointed Mel Fulgham ) all the way to Vienna from New York City for the express purpose of elongating the career of Hungary's 37- year- old Laszlo Papp, unbeaten in 24 fights. [...].
Trouble was, they forgot to tell all this to the long- forgotten Sandy, who almost loused up the works with an amazingly spirited, rugged performance. Randy gave lefty Laszlo all kinds of trouble for the first three rounds, but, in the fourth, Papp dropped Randy with a bludgeoning right that landed high on Sandy's left cheekbone. At 8, old pro Sandy made it to his feet but, obviously, the blood that showered down his face would blind him and make him an easy kayo mark for Papp [...]
But with Sandy, there is no such word as " Quit ". He hung in there for the next six rounds, despite taking a heavy battering in rounds six and nine. When the fight was over - with Papp given the decision by referee and sole- arbiter Kurt Rado - the 8000 fans gave both fighters a rousing ovation. It was a just decision [...].
