Johnson collapsed in his dressing room following the fight. Johnson was taken by ambulance to the local hospital, where he underwent brain surgery for a subdural haematoma. He was placed in a medically induced coma, but died five days later, after doctors and family members mutually decided to remove him from life support equipment. Jesus Chavez attended the funeral. His father Bill continued on in boxing as a trainer and cornerman. Jesus Chavez returned, but was never again the same fighter. Chavez lost the IBF World Lightweight title in his first defense by third round knockout to Julio Diaz in his next bout in February 2007. Chavez' last four comeback attempts in 2009 and 2010 all ended in failure.
