"Doug Vaillant, Cuban lightweight champion, today expressed hopes for a shot at the world titleholder Joe Brown after completely outboxing and upsetting No. 1 ranked Len Matthews. Vaillant scored a unanimous decision over Matthews last night in the feature bout of four 10 rounders at Convention Hall. The Cuban got off to a fast start by stunning his opponent in the first round and buckling his knees with a barrage of combination lefts and rights to the head and body. Vaillant, in one of the major upsets of the year, fired close to 50 shots at Matthews in the first round. Ringside observers counted 37 of them as direct hits." -Associated Press
