"Len Matthews, 4th ranking lightweight from Philadelphia found the range with a long right hand at 2:44 of the 10th round to score a TKO last night over JD Ellis of Trenton, N.J. in the feature bout at St. Nicholas Arena. Matthews dominated the action in the early rounds by outboxing Ellis and scoring with combinations to the head. Ellis found the mark, however, in the 4th round when he repeatedly scored with hooks to Matthews' head. Matthews became vulnerable to Ellis' hooks during the middle rounds. The sting left Ellis's punch in the 8th round and he began to wilt from punches to the head and body. At the end Ellis was spending most of his time trying to go the distance. Matthews' sharp right ended his trying and the bout." -Associated Press
