  • Referee: Fernando Pica

In a dramatic and controversial bout Dutch light heavyweight Wim Snoek was disqualified for the second time in his 77 bout career. In the 7th round Italian referee Pico had suddenly enough of the Dutchman's holdning and head butting against former top-contender Lennart Risberg of Sweden. By this time the fight was even but going nowhere, Snoek looking very tired, Risberg also holding and butting to some degree.

Snoek dropped Risberg in the first round with a left hook. The referee counted to eight, Risberg rose, and then the referee gave Snoek a warning for hitting after the break. A highly unusual procedure. Snoek again dumped Risberg on the floor in the opening round, this time with a right. A left hook in the 2nd from Snoek, and Risberg hit the deck again on his seat with a loud thump. However he was up, cheered on by his many loyal fans. He won the 3rd, outboxing Snoek completely. From then on Snoek didn't try much.

When the referee stopped the fight, Snoek's wife made quite a spectacle of herself at ringside and in the ring, screaming and weeping. Snoek lead her away and made complaints about the referee's handling of the fight to the press. Winner Risberg had some sympathy for Snoek. He told Dagens Nyheter that "the referee's sign language didn't make much sense to me either."
