Mark Rowe 159 lbs beat Les McAteer 158 lbs by TKO in round 14 of 15

  • Date: 1970-05-12
  • Location: Empire Pool, Wembley, London, United Kingdom
  • Referee: Harry Gibbs

"Mark Rowe, 158 1/2, is the new British and Commonwealth middleweight champion, by virtue of his KO over Les McAteer, 158, in the 14th round. Referee Harry Gibbs intervened with McAteer helpless on the ropes in a fierce contest. For the first 10 rounds it was all McAteer, who met the charging Rowe with a persistent left jab that soon had Mark's face gory, with a cut on the bridge of the nose. The tide began to turn, however, in the 12th round, with McAteer tiring. Gibbs excused McAteer in the 14th after he had taken three counts." -Ring Magazine, September 1970 issue

  • Ken Buchanan defended his British lightweight title against Brian Hudson on the co-feature of this card. And Joe Bugner, Brian London, John Stracey and Johnny Frankham also participated on this bill.
