Lew Powell, of the San Francisco Olympic Club, had been the 135-lb. Pacific Coast amateur champion in 1908. [1]

Earlier, circa early 1906, after he had fought as a semi-professional, he was suspended by the amateur athletic association. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Powell was reinstated and participated in the March-April 1906 amateur tournament in San Francisco. [6] [7]
