Luis, Lewis, Louie Velez
aka Lewis (Louie) / (Lewis) Velez was an outstanding open division boxer as a welterweight and Junior Middleweight in the 1970's. Velez fought in CYO, CPD and Golden Glove tournaments. Velez boxed out of Hamlin Park Boxing Gym and Wells Park.

Velez fought all the top welterweights in Illinois including bouts vs. Johnny Lira, Pete Podgorski & Warren Thunder.

  • 1976 Chicago Golden Gloves Open division 147 lb. Champion.
  • 1976 Chicago Park District Open division 156 lb. Champion defeating South sectional champion, Billy Page of Mann Park
  • Velez, considered by many a top open division boxer due to him being heavy handed aka big puncher, won the vast majority of his amateur bouts. Due to styles, Luis unfortunately went 0-3 vs. Open division rival Pete Podgorski in tournament and show bouts. Luis surprisingly scored a huge KO over Johnny Lira knocking him out cold despite the fact that Lira was 2-1 over Pete Podgorski who as mentioned above went 3-0 versus Velez. Styles make fights!
