Alexis Irénée du Pont Bayard, February 11, 1918 - September 3, 1985, a late 1930s boxer from Rockland, Delaware first gained notoriety in boxing on Ralph Tribuani’s card at the Auditorium March 9, 1938. Lex initially represented his college fraternity Sigma Theta then readily represented the T & C Athletic Club. Lex was the great-grandson of a prominent Southern State U.S. Senator James A. Bayard Jr., grandson of the thirtieth Secretary of State of the United States Thomas F. Bayard, son of U.S.Senator Thomas Francis Bayard Jr. and the great-great-grandson of Éleuthère Irénée du Pont, founder of the du Pont Company. Bayard was elected the thirteenth Lieutenant-Governor of the State of Delaware and served in the United States Marine Corps during World War ll. He practiced law in Wilmington, Delaware.
