Lige Drew was born Elijah James Drew Jr. 3 feb 1915 in Little Rock, Arkansas, the son of Elijah James Drew and Ophelia (Jones). His father went by James. For some reason on his SSN card he is listed as white, but this has to be a typo as in every other document he is listed as black.

His family looks to have moved from Arkansas to San Diego, California around the beginning of the depression.

In 1935 he is listed as a shoe-shiner in the San Diego City Directory.

In 1938 he is listed as an "athlete" in the San Diego voting rolls, living with Ophelia and his siblings.

In at least 1944 he was being managed by Jack Davidow. (The Fresno Bee 1-25-1944) The same story incorrectly claimed his age to be 22.
