"Rose stepped off to an early advantage over his more experienced foe from Mexico City, piling up a convincing lead through the first five rounds, putting Medel on the deck with a ferocious volley at the mid-point of the 4th round. Medel went down on the receiving end of a sharp right hook after taking two long, lunging lefts from the champ. But Rose came up short in the middle rounds. A sharp countering right hand by Medel brought Rose back to his senses - as he found himself sitting on the deck in Jose's corner. But Lionel was never in trouble again, as he reverted to his earlier workmanlike style, finishing out the bout in the plus side." -Pasadena Independent Star-News

- It was reported in the L.A. Times that referee George Latka said he was surprised at his score announcing a majority decision. Because, according to Latka, he had Rose winning. Latka stated upon reviewing his card that somewhere during the fight he 'lost a round'. He said he elected to let the matter die since the right man got the decision.
