  • Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale, was born in London, England, on January 25, 1857. He died at age 87 on April 13, 1944.
  • Lord Lonsdale was a founding member and the first president of the National Sporting Club, which governed boxing in England from 1891 to 1929.
  • The Lonsdale Belt is named in his honor.
  • Lord Lonsdale—along with promoter Tex Rickard—appeared on the cover of the first issue of The Ring magazine in 1922.
  • The Lonsdale clothing line is named after Lord Lonsdale. The company was founded in 1960 by former welterweight boxer Bernard Hart, who received permission to use the Lonsdale name from James Lowther, 7th Earl of Lonsdale.
