"Lou Ambers, making the first defense of his world's lightweight title, gave the veteran Tony Canzoneri perhaps the worst licking of his career in MSG. A pitiful shadow of the Canzoneri who used to meet 'em all and beat 'em all, Tony won only two rounds from the fast stepping Ambers. Ambers was unmarked at the finish, but one of Canzoneri's eyes was completely closed, there was a cut on the other and he was bleeding from a cut on the bridge of his nose. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 12-2-1 Ambers
- Attendance - 11,005

Post-fight comments
- "Ambers was much improved, but I can lick him. He hit me with a lot of backhand slaps that should not have been counted. I'll fight again. I'm not through." -Tony Canzoneri
- "Quit, nothing! Tony won the fight. Donovan robbed Tony of victory. He let Ambers hang on, he let Ambers stick his thumb in Tony's eyes and he impeded him from start to finish. But even then, I thought Tony won. Sure, Tony will fight again. He'll take a month's rest and come back and show 'em all." -Sammy Goldman, Canzoneri's manager.
- "It was pitiful. The most liberal count I could give Tony was two rounds with one even and the rest to Ambers." -Referee Arthur Donovan
