According to a June 5, 2005 article in the Houston Chronicle (Houston, Texas) by his daughter, boxing had left Barba with negative memories of the sport. For the rest of his life he refused to watch a single round on television or in the movies. Barba never again wanted anything to do with boxing.

He had served as the physical director for steamships on cruises to Brazil, and during the war he saw service in the merchant marine and the Coast Guard, of which he was also a physical director. He was twice a member of ship crews that were torpedoed. He had been ailing since he was shot in the back by a member of a German submarine crew while swimming away from a torpedoed ship during the war. Barba was 41 when he passed away.
