Bauman was a prolific referee based out of Cincinnati during the first-half of the 20th century. Bauman worked primarily out of Cincinnati, and other nearby cities such as Fort Thomas, Dayton and Covington in Kentucky. He also worked in other cities in Ohio as well such as Middletown and Dayton. Bauman reportedly worked as a referee on every single bout in Cincinnati in 1922, and by the time he approached retirement from officiating in 1941, he was claiming to have worked 15,000 bouts.
Prior to entering officiating, Bauman reportedly boxed under the name Lou Ross, and worked as a boxing instructor at the Central YMCA in Cincinnati, he later moved on to the Cincinnati Gym, where he worked for 25 years. Bauman also worked at the Cincinnati Paper & Cordage Company, which he did until his death at 68 years of age.
