Luis Fernandez, a talented amateur, competed entirely in France, although he was a member of Spain's 1936 Olympic Games team, which he boycotted.
He turned pro in Paris in late 1936, and became the Spanish bantamweight champion. While in France he was advertised by promotor Jeff Dickson as the Spanish Peter Kane. Eventually he would also become known under that name.
