Luis Rodriguez 147 lbs lost to Curtis Cokes 146 lbs by TKO at 1:00 in round 15 of 15

"Curtis Cokes, 146, Dallas, Texas, an 8-5 underdog, scored a 15th round TKO over Luis Rodriguez, 146 ¾ , a Cuban residing in Miami, Fla., at Municipal Auditorium Wednesday night in their welterweight title elimination bout. Rodriguez caught Cokes off balance in the 6th and dropped the Texan to his knees for a mandatory eight count. However, referee Pete Giarusso said Cokes was fouled on the punch and took the round away from Rodriguez. Cokes opened a gash beneath Rodriguez' eye in the 10th, then the Texan turned tiger in the 14th and resumed the assault in the final round. When blood began rushing from Rodriguez' mouth, Angelo Dundee waved his towel and Giarusso stopped it with exactly one minute gone." -Associated Press

  • "My boy likes to bang downstairs. The ref takes the round away and in doing so, took the fight from my guy. Cokes was wearing his trunks darn near his chin." -Angelo Dundee, Rodriguez' trainer, on the low blow penalized on Rodriguez in the 6th round and his fight plan.
